Mesmerizing 3D Paper Spirals Look Like Colorful Portals to Wonderland

Artist Maud Vantours uses flat sheets of paper to create dynamic dimensions of swirling colors, making her spiral series downright enchanting. Layer upon layer, Vantours builds upward to form what looks like a hypnotizing hole in the earth. Because her paper is arranged in colorful patterns, this hole-like illusion translates as a delightful portal, presumably to a fictional Wonderland filled with mirth and magic.
To a large extent, Vantours' twisting tunnels allow the viewer's imagination to formulate the dimension on the other end—one that's sure to include bright colors, dreamy designs, and eye-catching scenery. Each piece in the artist's portfolio is carefully arranged to conceal the papers' harsh edges. Vantours also uses a significant number of layers to, all at once, add depth and whimsicality while softening the visual slope of the downward drop. What results is a mesmerizing swirl of color gradience, beckoning the viewer's gaze deeper into the central abyss.
