In celebration of the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2014, artist Gerry Judah created a sculpture for the luxury car company Mercedes-Benz. The 85-foot-high arched installation soars over Goodwood House, and the impressive 160-ton-steel artwork measures 295 feet long. It features two cars, the 1934 Mercedes-Benz W25 “Silver Arrow” and the 2013 Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04, whose paths cross facing opposite directions. Judah combines the past with the present in this eye-catching tribute to racing.
The larger-than-life sculpture has a fantastical feel to it, and for a moment you might think that you’re witnessing two cars narrowly escaping a collision. It’s a surreal experience to see this track emerge from the ground and race towards the open sky.
It was 80 years ago when the Silver Arrow won its first race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with Manfred von Brauchitsch at the wheel. Since then, the company’s competition cars have always been silver. We see this in the contemporary AMG Petronas Formula 1 car that’s paired with the Silver Arrow; while it takes advantage of the improvements in technology, it still features the traditional color.
