Three years ago, artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen created a solar light device called Little Sun, which was produced with the philosophy that we all share the giant star. During the day, its power makes the world go around, but on cloudy days or at night, there needs to be a supplemental source. “Light [electricity] is for everyone—it determines what we do and how we do it,” they write, but not everyone has access to this invaluable resource. With this in mind, the two successfully launched Little Sun, and have now designed a follow up device: the beautiful Little Sun Charge, a handheld, high-performance solar phone charger and light.
Eliasson and Ottesen’s product derives all of its function thanks to the sun. From five hours of sunshine, it has a full smartphone charge that works with all of your existing mobile devices and cables by using a standard USB port. It’s great for outdoor use, with a solar light (disguised as a sunburst) that’s placed in the middle of the blue square.
Little Sun Charge has a positive global impact, especially for people in developing countries. Because the device uses solar power, this means it will work for everyone, whether or not they have access to the electrical grid. It provides much-needed light to those who have might’ve previously been in the dark.
Eliasson and Ottesen has launched a Kickstarter to fund their project. You can pre-order the Little Sun Charge, and even participate in a one-for-one campaign: you’ll buy two lights, and one of them will be supplied on your behalf to their Alight Zimbabwe partner for local distribution.
